Italy marks National Day

Chisinau, 2 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Day of the Proclamation of the Italian Republic (1946), a unitary state in southern Europe, is marked today.
Italy has an area of 301,338 square km and a temperate climate. Due to the shape of its continental form, the Italians call the country lo Stivale (Boot). With 61 million residents, Italy is the fifth most populated country of Europe. Italy is a developed state and has the third biggest economy of the Euro zone and the eighth in the world according to the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The country plays a leading role in the world military, cultural and diplomatic affairs and is regarded as a major regional power. Italy is one of the founding members of the European Union, being also member of more international institutions.
During the Renaissance, the Italian culture flourished, producing scholars, artists and people with much and varied knowledge, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo and Michelangelo. The Italian explorers, such as Marco Polo, Columbus and Vespucci, discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, contributing to the age of great discoveries for the Europeans.
Italy became republic after a referendum held on 2 June 1946 – a day marked since then as Day of the Republic. It was then the first time when the Italian women had right to vote.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Italy were established on 21 February 1992.
Statistics data shows that, at present, 1,397 enterprises with Italian capital work in Moldova; the investments in the registered share capital amount to about 1.731 billion lei, which is the second position according to the number of enterprises with foreign capital and on the sixth one in terms of direct foreign investments in the Moldovan economy.
The trade exchanges between Moldova and Italy stood at 519.3 million dollars in 2018.
On the concerned period, the Moldovan export to Italy amounted to 229.8 million dollars, recording a growth of 44.3 per cent against the same period of 2017. The imports made from Italy by economic agents from Moldova amounted to 289.5 million dollars in the first nine months of 2018, registering an increase of 19.4 per cent against the same period of 2017.
A concert titled Il Vino e L’Opera Lirica by Gianfranco Pappalardo Fiumara (piano) and Roberto Cresca (tenor), took place at the Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic from Chisinau on 1 June evening, on the occasion of the National Day of Italy.
