Chisinau, 3 June /MOLDPRES/ - European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn today paid a visit to Chisinau. In the Moldovan capital, the EU official met the leaders of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Democratic Party (PDM) and ACUM bloc, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and President Igor Dodon.
At a news briefing, Johannes Hahn told journalists that he had come to Chisinau to see the phase of negotiations for the creation of a parliamentary majority and swearing in office of a government. He noted that, if the three big parties fail to make a majority, the president of Moldova will have to dissolve the parliament, which would entail more financial risks, including the ceasing of the assistance on behalf of the International Monetary Fund.
„I met the leaders of those three parties and the president. EU is interested in the existence of a stable government in Moldova, so that politicians are able to improve the citizens’ living standards,” Hahn said.
The Brussels official specified that the fact that no negotiations had been held so far for the creation of a majority was surprising. “This fact is surprising in a pluralist country, where no party can get majority. A coalition cabinet is something natural for a democracy, which implies certain concessions on behalf of parties. The formations which entered the parliament must join efforts for the good of this country,” the EU commissioner added.
Also today, the special representative of the Russian president for the development of the commercial and economic relations with Moldova, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak is on a working visit to Chisinau too.
