Round table held in Moldovan capital on occasion of World Environment Day

Chisinau, 5 June /MOLDPRES/ - The World Environment Day today was marked in Moldova by more actions of informing, including a roundtable titled, Stop to Air’s Pollution, organized by the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry.
“This day is an occasion to highlight the present environment-related problems locally, nationally, regionally and globally, to remind the mankind how serious the things can become, if we do not prove care for the natural heritage. At this meeting, we were able to discuss the reasons for the air’s pollution worldwide and nationally, the ecological situation in Moldova and the actions carried out to improve the state of the environment. Not only our life, but also the one of the future generations depends on the state of environment and we our duty is to transmit a clean planet to those coming after us,” Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Minister Nicolae Ciubuc said at the event.
At the same time, the official noted that “the governmental institutions, local public administrations, business environment, non-governmental organizations, etc. must join efforts to ensure the continuity of life on this planet.”
The main events in the context of the World Environment Day will be held in the Valley of Mills Park from Chisinau on 7 June. The schedule is prepared by an initiative group, along with the World Health Organization in Moldova, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Moldova), projects financed by the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF) Small Grants Programme, Association of Environment and Ecological Tourism Journalists. The World Environment Day is annually marked on 5 June and is the most important holiday of the environment calendar. The day was declared in Stockholm in 1972 at the world environment conference titled, Only One Earth, and was approved by representatives of 113 states.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year, about seven million premature deaths are assigned to the air pollution – which represents 800 people dying every hour or 13 every minute. On the whole, the air pollution is in charge of more deaths than many other risk factors, including the malnutrition, consumption of alcohol and physical inactivity. Children are most of all subjected to risks. In the world, 93 per cent of the children breath air containing bigger concentrations of pollutants than the ones regarded by WHO as safe for the human health.
