Energy Day marked in central Moldova town

Chisinau, 24 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Energy Day was organized in the Calarasi town, within the EU Sustainable Energy Week, marked on 17-23 June. The event’s agenda included the launch of green technologies of energy, first parking for bicycles from Chisinau, dances and prizes for the most creative drawings which show the efficient consumption of energy.    

The Energy Day, marked in the Calarasi town for the second time, in partnership with the Viitorul (Future) Institute for Development and Social Initiatives (IDIS), was set to enhance the degree of citizens’ awareness about the energy efficiency, use of renewable energy resources, adaptation to the climate change and relation between energy and climate changes.  

„The energy is a resource without which we cannot exist and work, which is worth being turned to good account and consumed efficiently. Starting from 2012, the Calarasi town has become signatory to the Mayors’ Convention and, along with thousands of European mayoralties, committed to cut the CO2 emissions by 42 per cent till 2030. I hope much that the current energy efficiency project will help us achieve these goals and become an energy intelligent town,” the Calarasi mayor, Nicolae Melnic, said at the opening of the Energy Day.    

For his part, the IDIS executive director, Liubomir Chiriac, stressed that “the Calarasi town is recognized all over the country as a town which takes into account the latest tendencies in the renewable energy sector.” “I want the public illumination, which is to be modernized in Calarasi, thanks to the project, to become a pride for the town’s residents and motivate them to remain at home,” Chiriac said.  

More actions for promoting sustainable energy took place in Calarasi on the Energy Day. In the settlement, a novel exhibition of lamps was staged at the History and Ethnography Museum, a contest of drawings and painting on the energy subject was held, the first parking for bicycles was opened, an artistic programme was presented for all residents and guests of the Calarasi town. All activities were carried out in the Central Park from the Calarasi town in open air and assembled dozens of participants of all ages.  

The sustainable energy day in the Calarasi town took place within the project, Optimization of public illumination in the Calarasi town – Licurici in heart of forests, implemented by the Calarasi mayoralty, in partnership with IDIS Viitorul. The project is financed by the European Union through the EU programme, Convention of mayors – demonstrational projects. The project sees the setting of a 21-km-long network of architectural illumination of two public buildings. As a result, the project will provide a real saving of 6,500 euro per year; it will allow cutting the CO2 emissions and the maintenance and exploitation costs.
