Moldovan government to appoint two judges to constitutional court throughout contest, announces PM

Chisinau, 27 June /MOLDPRES/ – The Government will nominate two judges to the Constitutional Court (CC) throughout a contest. The announcement was made on Thursday, 27 June, by Prime Minister, Maia Sandu, on her official website.
According to the quoted source, the Executive will launch in the next round of contest for two vacant positions of judges of CC. "The competition rules and evaluation criteria for candidates will be determined in such a way that competence, professional merits and integrity are the key elements that will underpin the nomination of winners. The CC must become independent persons, both in political sphere and in interest groups, and their only subordination must be in relation to provisions of the Constitution of Moldova," wrote PM.
The head of Executive says: "Moldova must start building strong institutions to counter any attempt to capture the state in the future."
On Wednesday, 26 June, the judges CC announced that they resigned in body.
The CC is made up of six judges, appointed for a six – year term. Two judges are appointed by Parliament, two by Government and two by Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM). The constitutional judges have immunity. They can not be detained, arrested, searched, sent to trial without the prior consent of CC. They can hold this office for two mandates.
