Latvian foreign affairs minister reiterates every willingness to support Moldova in European integration process

Chisinau, 28 June /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Maia Sandu today had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs. The Latvian minister congratulated the PM on managing to peacefully take over the governance. He noted that this was an important democratic achievement for Moldova, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
Prime Minister Maia Sandu thanked for the support provided to Moldova by Latvia in the last years. “At present, we must clean the state’s institutions, edify strong and independent institutions and come up with results due to be felt by the citizens as quickly as possible, so that they are willing to remain at home,” Maia Sandu said.
As for the foreign policy dimension, the officials discussed the working out of an action plan for Moldova’s European integration. In terms of domestic affairs, the sides tackled the issue of local elections due in next October, with the PM giving guarantee that the ballot would be held transparently, freely and fairly.
Also, Maia Sandu referred to the actions the government was going to undertake to optimize the administrative system, fight the corruption phenomenon, as well as to investigate the bank fraud. “We will act responsibly to correct the errors of the former governance and, at the same time, protect the low-income people. The citizens support us in what we are doing now. We must not disappoint them and do our utmost to fulfill their expectations. Now they feel free and we will encourage the strengthening of democracy in continuation as well.”
For his part, Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs gave assurances that Latvia would continue backing and providing needed assistance to Moldova, in order to achieve the goal of the country’s European integration.
