Chisinau, 1 July /MOLDPRES/ - The number of members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) might be extended from 12 to 19. The provision is contained in a draft law approved by the cabinet today. The draft regards amendments to the law on the prosecutor’s office.
Those seven new members, who are suggested to be included in CSP, are to be delegated as follows: one member on behalf of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences, Moldova’s president and Board of the Lawyers’ Union and two ones by the government and parliament each.
The draft also concerns the establishment of the interim duties of the office of prosecutor general. Thus, the document suggests that, if this position is vacant, CSP should nominate an acting prosecutor general till the organization of the contest and appointment, following this contest, of the prosecutor general by presidential decree.
Another amendment regards the exclusion of the condition on the obligation to hold Moldova’s citizenship by the candidate for the office of prosecutor general.
„By majority vote, the government backed the note, in which it expresses support for this stipulation, in which the existence of Moldova’s citizenship is not conditioned for the candidate for the office of prosecutor general. The final decision will be taken in parliament,” Prime Minister Maia Sandu after the cabinet meeting.
The draft is to be considered by parliament.
