European Council president confirms EU's support for Moldova to implement reforms

Chisinau, 3 July /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Maia Sandu, during an official visit to Brussels on 2-4 July, today had a meeting with President of the European Council Donald Tusk. The event was focused on notifying the high European official about the new cabinet’s firmness to advance on the European integration’s way, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

In the beginning of the meeting, the PM informed about the new government’s priorities and commitments to observe the fundamental rights of the citizens, strengthen the democratic principles through firm actions of fighting corruption schemes, cleaning the institutions, de-monopolization, ensuring transparency and a truthful market economy.  

The prime minister reiterated the cabinet’s priority to re-launch the partnership with EU, through the implementation of the commitments from the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.    

For his part, President of the European Council Donald Tusk congratulated Moldova for the peaceful transition of power and wished the PM success in the difficult task to re-bring the country to the irreversible way of implementing reforms for the benefit of the citizens. According to the official, there is willingness in the EU institutions and member states to back Moldova in the reforms’ programme.

Also in Brussels today, Prime Minister Maia Sandu had a meeting with Vice- President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič, during which the officials discussed aspects of cooperation in the energy security sector, which is one of the priority subjects of the current government.    

Other subjects of strategic importance tackled were focused on the development of inter-connections with EU, with emphasis on the completion of the construction and full putting into operation of the gas pipeline Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau. At the same time, the sides reiterated also the importance to finish the project which would ensure the supply of gas in inverted flow regime through the Trans-Balkan corridor. Also, the officials stressed the importance of the inter-connection of high-voltage transmission lines to the EU market, through Romania, as well as the stage of implementation of the commitments assumed, on the sectoral dimension of the Association Agreement.  

For his part, Vice-President of the European Commission Maroš Šefčovič expressed full willingness to support Moldova in its efforts of modernizing the energy sector and integrate into the regional system.
