Police says loss of MDL 29 million caused by bank robbery in Chisinau municipality

Chisinau, 08 July /MOLDPRES/ – Police opts for tightening the regulatory framework on security systems used by Moldovan commercial banks. The decision has been announced after two days ago a bank in Chisinau municipality was robbed, and the loss caused amounts to over MDL 29 million (€1.45 million), according to law enforcement officials.

The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) has announced that on the night of 05 – 06 July, a branch of a bank, located in Buiucani sector, in a specially designed room to store safety boxes, unknown persons stole 84 cassettes of individual financial means, material goods, jewelery and documents.

The IGP has specified that the police appeal was made on 06 July, at 09:15, a few hours after the robbery was committed. The criminals would have penetrated the bank by cutting the glass bars and forcing it, as well as by damaging the lock from the specially designed room.

The police have stated that up till present, there have suffered 31 persons in this case, with a material prejudice amounting up to MDL 29,431,840.00.

According to the law, the branch did not take all necessary security measures to prevent such acts. In this context, the IGP claims that it will address the competent institutions of state to tighten the regulatory framework on security systems used by the commercial banks of Moldova, including to avoid repeating similar acts.

In this case, it has been initiated a case for "theft in particularly large proportions".
