Prosecutor General of Moldova resigns from office

Chisinau, 11 July /MOLDPRES/ - President of Moldova Igor Dodon today informed that he had signed a decree on the dismissal from office of Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen, based on the application on resignation submitted by the latter.
According to Dodon, “it is a must for the new leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office to be elected as soon as possible.”
“I believe that the new Prosecutor General must have the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, should have experience in the prosecution bodies, be honest and capable to re-establish the good image of the institution, ensuring, through supremacy of law, the investigation of multiple unlawful acts, including those committed in the past,” Dodon said.
The head of state noted that he would sign a decree on the appointment only of a candidate put forward by the Superior Council of Prosecutors.
Eduard Harunjen was appointed Prosecutor General of Moldova in December 2016. He is 47 years old and has worked at the Prosecutor’s Office of the Chisinau municipality since 1994. Starting from 1996 till 2005, Harunjen held the position of deputy head of more departments at the Interior Ministry. On the period 2011-2013, he was prosecutor for special missions at the Prosecutor General’s Office; subsequently, Harunjen held the office of anticorruption prosecutor and first deputy of the Prosecutor General.
