More than 2.6 million people live in Moldova

Chisinau, 11 July /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 2,681,735 people, of whom 52.4 per cent women, were living in Moldova on 1 January 2019. Exactly one year ago, the population of Moldova stood at three million 547,500 people, according to the National Statistics Bureau (BNS).    

At a news conference today, BNS director Vitalie Valcov said that this result had been triggered by the enhanced phenomenon of international migration, mostly unofficial, existence of border segments which are not checked by the legal authorities, pointing to the Transnistrian region, etc.  

The official stressed that, once the number of residents revised in Moldova, more social, economic and development indexes would be updated. “Some indexes will become better; the others, on the contrary, will show a worse situation in certain fields,” Vitalie Valcov said.

In the context, the BNS head specified that the overall fertility rate had decreased in the last years, given that more children are born outside Moldova.  

The revised number of Moldova’s residents for the 2014-2018 years was unveiled within a project carried out by the National Statistics Bureau jointly with the Swiss Cooperation Office within the UN project, Strengthening National Statistics System. When calculating the number of residents, decision-makers took into account the notion of usual residence of Moldova’s citizens, as well as of stay abroad during 12 months.    

The event was organized in the context of the World Population Day, annually marked on 11 July. This day for the first time was marked in 1989, at a recommendation by the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme, with the decision-makers’ declared goal to focus attention on the urgency and importance of the problems of the mankind. This date was chosen as a result of the fact that the world’s population had reached the figure of five billion on this day of the 1987 year. In 1990, under the Resolution by the General Assembly, the United Nations ruled to continue marking the World Population Day, in order to highlight the problems of the population, including the latter’s relations with the environment and development.
