Chisinau, 16 July /MOLDPRES/ - The president of Moldova, at a proposal by the Superior Council of Prosecutors, will nominate an acting prosecutor general till the organization of the contest and his/her appointment under presidential decree. The MPs approved a draft law to this effect, in the first reading, by majority vote at the plenary meeting today.

According to the authors, the initiative will remove the legislative void, in which the vacancy of the office of prosecutor general is not clearly regulated. Presently, the legal norm in force regulates the way of ensuring the interim duties of the prosecutor general in case of his/her absence or impossibility of exercising the job duties.

The former prosecutor general, Eduard Harunjen, resigned from office on 11 July 2019. Deputy Prosecutor General Igor Popa exercises the interim duties at the Prosecutor General’s Office.
