Child in serious condition at hospital after being bitten by dog in central locality of Moldova

Chisinau, 17 July /MOLDPRES/ – A child of 10 years of age from village Goianul Nou, Stauceni commune, is in a very serious condition at hospital after he was bitten a dog in June.
Asked by agency, an infectious physician at the municipal hospital for contagious diseases for children of Chisinau municipality, Diana Vlad, has said the minor was admitted to the medical institution on Friday, 12 July, in serious condition at intensive care department, with a clinical picture specific to an encephalitis. As a result of epidemiological data and clinical picture, it was confirmed the diagnosis of rabies.
Currently, the condition of child is extremely serious.
In June, the child was at a rest camp where he was bitten by a dog.
In this context, the Centre of Healthcare of Stauceni has warned all persons who have been bitten by dogs or other animals such as foxes or cats in 2019 to address urgently to their family doctor.
Rabies is a serious infectious disease transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans, caused by a Rhabdoviridae virus. The first symptoms can occur between a few days and almost 01 year from the time of infection, but in most cases the symptoms develop in 04 – 06 weeks. At first, pain and numbness occur at the site of the bite, followed by a vague symptom that may occur in many other conditions including fever, cough or dry throat, pain, burning, itching, tingling or numbness at the bite or initial exposure, abdominal pain, anxiety, or irritation that is exacerbated and can evolve to extreme agitation.
