Chisinau, 22 July /MOLDPRES/ - „Citizens presently want all those corrupt to be punished. Citizens currently want the judges and prosecutors fulfill their obligations correctly and professionally,” Prime Minister Maia Sandu said at the opening of an event titled, Government’s priorities in justice and anticorruption sector, held at the Palace of the Republic today, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The roundtable, Government’s priorities in justice and anticorruption sector, is organized the Legal Resources Centre from Moldova, in partnership with the Moldovan cabinet on 22 and 23 July, with the public discussions held at the Palace of the Republic on 23 July.
Attending the event were two foreign experts in the justice and anticorruption field, Laura Stefan from Romania and Eka Zguladze from Georgia. The support provided by these experts with authority in the sector of fighting corruption is very important for Moldova’s government and for the firm agenda of the new governance to reform the justice sector, as well as to combat corruption and illegal schemes established in the past, especially by the previous governance, in all activity sectors.
The participants in the today’s event initiated the first domestic consultations between the government and the civil society on ensuring the independence of justice. “An urgent priority of the new government is the justice reform, so that the political control over the judicial system be completely removed, prosecutors cease fulfilling political orders and judges work in the national interest and protect the honest citizens. Because of the lack of an independent justice in the last years, the citizens lost their confidence in the state. The politically controlled justice became the principal obstacle to Moldova’s development. We should re-establish the trust of citizens, foreign partners and investors in Moldova,” PM Maia Sandu said at the consultations meeting today.
A public discussion on government’s priorities in the justice and anticorruption field will be held on 23 July. Representatives of judicial system, Supreme Court of Justice, courts of appeal, courts, prosecutor’s office, Superior Council of Prosecutors, Prosecutor General’s Office, specialized prosecutor’s offices and territorial ones, lawyers, as well as representatives of parliament, presidency, civil society and development partners were invited to the event.
The tomorrow’s public discussion could be watched live on the webpage www.privesc.eu, as well as on the government’s webpage.
The events from 22 and 23 July are organized within the project, Institutional support for development of organization, implemented by the Legal Resources Centre from Moldova and financed by Sweden.
