Chisinau, 24 July /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Maia Sandu participated in discussions at the European Parliament, within the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), in Brussels today. The commission members congratulated Maia Sandu on the peaceful taking over of the government’s leadership. They also showed interest in the measures the cabinet is set to undertake to improve the situation in Moldova in the judiciary, social, economic sectors, as well as in terms of cooperation between the political formations of the parliamentary coalition, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
„The European Parliament has always spoken firmly about the corruption of the oligarchic regime from Moldova. Your evaluations and support helped us, the citizens of Moldova, those who believe in democracy, survive and continue our fight for freedom and we are quite grateful for this,” Maia Sandu said in her speech. She reiterated the government’s priorities, noting that the biggest challenge was the reformation of justice and strengthening the rule of law state.
„We face the difficult task to create a functional and democratic governance system, which is to serve the citizens and resist the attempts to be captured in the long run, through the separation of the executive, legislative and judicial powers, the economic and political interests. This is a common denominator for the Moldovan citizens, no matter the language they speak and no matter the geopolitical affiliation,” Maia Sandu also said.
At the same time, the prime minister referred also to the achievement of the cabinet’s key goals: development of a friendly business environment, due to lead to a sustainable and inclusive growth, reform of the education and health sectors.
The members of the AFET Commission congratulated Maia Sandu on the comprehensive governing action programme, aimed at improving the living standards of the citizens and reiterated the European Union’s willingness to back the Sandu cabinet in the processes of strengthening the democracy. “The progress is essential as regards the improvement of the relations with EU. I am sure that all these things will be seen in the near future and the results will be seen,” the head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, said.
The participants in the meeting tackled also the evolution of the situation as regards the Transnistrian settlement process. Maia Sandu said that the government would continue insisting on the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the territory of Moldova. “We will not accept the federalization as a solution to the Transnistrian conflict and we will continue the political negotiations to get a special status for Transnistria within a sovereign Moldova, with territorial integrity, within the limits of the internationally recognized borders,” the PM specified.
The Moldovan government is set also to become a reliable partner for the citizens and the development partners and has the difficult task to consolidate a divided society. “We face the hard task to unite a divided people because of a geopolitical rhetoric used for more years in a row, which instigated various parts of the society one against another,” Maia Sandu added.
