UN Food and Agriculture Organization to back implementation of agriculture, environmental goals from 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Moldova

Chisinau, 30 July /MOLDPRES/ - The implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Moldova (SDGs) dealing with the agricultural and environmental food systems in Moldova, as well as the monitoring of the process in the long run will be provided by a Coordination Council set up by the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM), with the support of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).    

The first meeting of the Council took place today and brought together representatives of MADRM, State Chancellery, Economics and Infrastructure Ministry, Finance Ministry, National Statistics Bureau, local authorities, private sector, civil society and foreign donors.  

The participants in the event discussed the coordination of efforts for SDGs’ implementation. The latter are to be integrated in relevant budgetary planning strategies and documents, as part of the commitments taken by the Moldovan government for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  

At the same time, the participants in the meeting unveiled the results of the topic-related report on the nationalization of SDGs regarding the agricultural and environmental food systems, other activities carried out in 2018-2019 within the FAO project, Support for Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry in implementation and Monitoring of Sustainable Development  Goals, which ends today.    

“We can say that, during this year, decision-makers have made important progress in the process of SDGs’ nationalization, due to the FAO expertise, at the level of the agricultural and environmental food systems. Thirty eight out of 53 SDGs’ targets, dealing with the agricultural and environmental food systems, have been identified as relevant and were adjusted to the country context. They are to be integrated by the Coordination Council in the policies’ planning documents,” the state secretary general at MADRM, Iurie Usurelu, said.    

“We are happy that we have managed to meet the needs of the competent ministry in strengthening the capacities of SDGs’ implementation and monitoring. We managed to analyze the progress made since the moment of adoption of the 2030 Agenda till present as concerns the nationalizations of these SDGs, as well as to come up with relevant recommendations for an as efficient as possible implementation,” the FAO representative in Moldova, Raimund Jehle, said.       

In the end of the meeting, the participants signed a joint declaration on the commitment and efforts for the implementation of SDGs as regards the  agricultural and environmental food systems.    

In September 2015, Moldova, along with another United Nations member states, committed to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by adopting the Declaration of the Sustainable Development Summit, held in New York. This Agenda will carry out what was initiated within the Millennium Development Goals, with the main goal being the liquidation of poverty till 2030 and ensuring the sustainable development all over the world.
