Moldova might receive more money on behalf of EU in 2020

Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova might receive more money on behalf of EU in 2020. MEP Siegfried Muresan today submitted more amendments to the European Union’s draft budget for 2020, thereby demanding an overall increase of 102 million euros for the eastern neighbourhood, including Moldova.   

The European MP reasoned his demand by the fact that “the government led by Maia Sandu took commitments to resume the economic and political reforms provided for in the Association Agreement and the European Union must respond to the wishes of pro-European cabinet and provide additional financing for the projects and policies, the goal of which is to improve the living of Moldova’s citizens, strengthen the rule of law state and consolidate the fight against corruption.”   

The amendments submitted by Siegfried Muresan stipulate the increase in allocations for the budgetary lines through which the investments projects and the ones of reformation of the public administration reformation in the countries from the eastern neighbourhood are financed.  

„As for Moldova, my amendments are aimed at financings projects through which we want to enhance the well-being of citizens, funds due to be used to develop the transport and energy infrastructure, backing small- and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), farmers, as well as at reforming the public administration and strengthening the rule of law state and combating corruption. We expect the Moldovan authorities to fulfill the commitments on the implementation of the reforms agreed upon, so that the European Union continues to support Moldova with European funds, with technical assistance and political backing,” Siegfried Muresan added.    

Besides the three amendments worth 102 million euros in all, European lawmaker Siegfried Muresan also submitted an amendment, through which he demands the allocation of an extra 20 million euros against the European Commission’s proposal, in order to supplement the number of Erasmus+ scholarships provided to students from the eastern neighbourhood.  

The European Union’s draft budget for 2020 is to be adopted by the European Parliament and Council of the European Union till late next November.

On a visit to Chisinau, President of the European People’s Party Joseph Daul said that the money provided to Moldova by the European Union must be invested in concrete projects, noting that that it would be offered as the reforms are implemented in Moldova.
