Moldovan head of state meets more EU officials

Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/ - President Igor Dodon has had a meeting with European Parliament President David-Maria Sassoli in Brussels.
At the meeting, the head of state gave assurances that the implementation of the Association Agreement and the structural reforms would continue. The Moldovan president noted that Moldova opted for the boosting of the relations with the European Union and strengthening of the democratic institutions in the country, which implies fighting corruption, thorough investigation of the bank fraud, justice reform.
In Brussels, the head of state discussed also with European Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn. The officials tackled subjects on Moldova’s domestic agenda, stressing the importance to maintain the ruling coalition, which is to implement the justice reform and consolidate the democratic institutions. Igor Dodon highlighted the need to promote a balanced foreign policy with the partners from the West and the East, “based on the status of permanent neutrality.
In the end of his visit to Brussels, the Moldovan president had a meeting with President of the Belgian Senate Sabine Laruelle. The head of state specified that Moldova further relied on the support of Belgium in efforts of modernization and aligning with the European standards, through implementation of structural reforms. Referring to the commercial and economic relations, the Moldovan president pointed out the increase in the trade exchanges in the last years. Thus, in 2018, the import from Belgium stood at about 46 million dollars, up by 18 per cent against 2017. The export to Belgium in 2018 amounted to about 15 million dollars, increasing by 14 per cent.
Igor Dodon on 4 September paid a two-day visit to Brussels. During the visit, the head of state also had meetings with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, European Commissioner for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič and Chair of the European parliament Foreign Affairs Committee David McAllister.
Before leaving for Brussels, Igor Dodon paid a one-day visit to Moscow, where he is to go later this week, in order to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.
