Chisinau, 19 September /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Maia Sandu, in Washington, has given assurances that the Moldovan government was unequivocally determined to re-establish the democratic processes in Moldova. The PM made the statement at a meeting with U.S. President’s Special Assistant, member of the National Security Council Tim Morrison, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
Maia Sandu referred to actions carried out to this end: changes in the Electoral Code, reform of the Prosecutor General’s Office, starting inquiries to investigate the corruption schemes, as well as the transparent financing of the political parties. “We will not do compromises as to the key reforms, including at the selection of an independent prosecutor general. The legal system must be cleaned, even if it puts up resistance,” the prime minister said.
One of the key subjects tackled was the bank fraud file. Prime Minister Maia Sandu asked for the support of the U.S. authorities in investigating the money laundering schemes and the one-billion-dollar theft, as well as in seizing the people guilty and recovery of the assets purloined. Tim Morrison assured of the full support and cooperation on behalf of the United States’ law-enforcement bodies, especially of the Department of Justice. The official stressed the importance of the rule of law state, noting that these persons must be brought to court, if there is evidence that they were involved in criminal activities.
Tim Morrison expressed support for Moldova’s pro-European way, specifying that the USA observed the country’s sovereignty and appreciated the good relations with Romania and Ukraine.
The officials confirmed the commitment to strengthen the Moldova-USA cooperation in the defence and cyber security sectors.
