More than 1,170,000 citizens vote in Moldova till 21:00

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - About 1,173,000 citizens voted till 21:00, with the voter turnout standing at 41.68 per cent. Under the legislation in force, the polling stations close at 21:00. Yet, the leadership of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has earlier informed that the period of voting might be prolonged for several polling stations, if not all people willing to exercise their right to vote managed to do this.
At the today’s ballot, most voters, 54.3 per cent, have been women. And the most active electors were elderly people – 34 per cent, followed by citizens older than 41 years – 25 per cent. The weakest voter turnout, only 6 per cent, was recorded among people younger than 25 years.
As many as 898 mayors and 11,580 councilors are to be elected at the local elections. The last general local polls took place on 14 June 2015. At the then elections, the voter turnout was 49 per cent.
After the closing of the polling stations, more electoral contenders gave news conferences and thanked the voters for support. At the same time, they asked the members of the electoral bureaus, as well as the observers to be vigilant in the process of counting the votes.
