Runoff to be held in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 21 October /MOLDPRES/- After processing 305 reports out of 307, candidate of the Moldovan Socialist Party for mayor position of Chisinau Ion Ceban obtained in the local elections on 20 October 40.3 percent of the votes, and candidate of ACUM bloc Andrei Nastase – 31.1 per cent of votes. Thus, the runoff will take place in the capital.
The preliminary results shows that 10.1 per cent of Chisinau residents voted for the Liberal Party’s (PL) candidate, Dorin Chirtoaca, and about 4.74 per cent – for the representative of the National Unity Party (PUN), Octavian Ticu, 3 per cent for Valerii Klimenco, 2.73 per cent – Victor Chironda, 2.44 –Vladimir Cebotari and 1 per cent – Ivan Diacov. The other candidates registered in the electoral race grabbed less than 1 per cent of the suffrages.
According to the Electoral Code, the candidate for the office of mayor is regarded as elected, if he/she gets more than a half of the validly expressed votes of the electors who participated in the ballot. If none candidate picked up more than a half of the validly expressed votes, a runoff election is held in two weeks with the candidates who got the largest number of votes in the first round of the elections.
