Chisinau, 21 October /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 192 mayors of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM) were elected in the first round of the 20 October general local elections, which accounts for over 20 per cent of all mayoralties of Moldova. The PDM leader, Pavel Filip, made statements to this effect today. Filip noted that the result achieved at the ballot had exceeded the one from the 2015 polls, when 147 PDM candidates were elected as mayors.

The PDM leader showed confidence that the number of Democrats’ mayors would considerably increase after the runoff. A number of 175 PDM candidates will compete in the runoff. At the same time, the Democratic Party got the majority of votes for the offices of councilors in six districts and ranks second in 12 districts.

Pavel Filip said that the Democrats’ faction in parliament would have a new MP, after a PDM candidate, Ghenadie Verdes, had picked up the majority of votes in the uninominal electoral district No 17.

As for the coalitions locally, the PDM leader said the local authorities must forget about the political affiliation and work for the good of the citizens.
