Chisinau, 19 December /MOLDPRES/ - The justice reform will be carried out and certainly, while working together, we will make progress, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii has said at a meeting with Venice Commission President Gianni Buquicchio, on a visit to Moldova at an invitation by the parliament speaker, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.
”We have made coalition with the people of Moldova and we want to re-bring the people’s trust in the state institutions and in justice. Unfortunately, we have lost much time and the state’s institutions were discredited through statements and actions of some politicians. The reform must make the justice functional and re-bring it to the service of the people,” Zinaida Greceanii said.
The parliament speaker noted that the present draft took into consideration the Venice Commission’s amendments and announced openness for cooperation in continuation. In the context, Greceanii said that the law-enforcement bodies were working for returning the stolen one billion dollars and the punishment of the guilty people. Yet, all these things must be made without populism and pressure on justice on behalf of politicians, the parliament speaker said.
For his part, President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio reconfirmed the openness for cooperation and subscribed to the stance of the parliament speaker as to the need of a construction position on behalf of all political parties, aimed at serving the country’s supreme interest.
Also today, Gianni Buquicchio met the head and the members of the parliament’s juridical commission for rules and immunities and will have meetings with judges and civil society’s representatives. On 20 December, the Venice Commission’s delegation will meet Prime Minister Ion Chicu, Justice Minister Fadei Nagacevschi, the members of the Superior Council of Magistracy and the judges of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The invitation to visit Moldova, made by the parliament speaker to the leadership of the European Commission for Democracy through Law, fits the Moldovan authorities’ efforts to reform the justice. Moldova’s leadership reiterated the importance of the Venice Commission’s assistance and expertise in the reforms’ implementation.
