United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to further support Moldova in enhancing competitiveness of agro-food sector

Chisinau, 19 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu today had a discussion with Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Qu Dongyu, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The officials exchanged opinions on prospects of Moldova’s cooperation with FAO. In the context, Ion Chicu said that the government appreciated the Organization’s support provided to Moldova to diminish the consequences triggered by the drought and floods, for rural development and the development of the agro-food sector.
In accordance with the government’s Action Plan for 2020-2023, the PM expressed the cabinet’s interest in receiving FAO’s assistance and expertise to start a new project on consolidation of farmlands; implementation of modern technologies in agriculture, including environment-friendly ones; diminution of the food prodigality; presently, a regional project to this effect is prepared, to which Moldova will be party; implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agency.
The FAO director general said that Moldova had been selected as priority state for the Organization’s assistance and would further benefit from support to enhance the competitiveness of the agro-food sector, high-value agriculture and sustainable management of natural resources. The 2016-2019 country framework programme containing these three priority sectors will be extended by another two years.
In the last years, FAO has provided Moldova with support and assistance through 15 national projects worth about two million dollars, as well as within other five regional projects.
