Moldovan PM inspects airports in northern localities

Chisinau, 22 December /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Ion Chicu, inspected the airports in northern localities of Moldova, on Saturday: Balti and Marculesti. During the visit, PM was accompanied by the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure, Anatol Usatîi, Minister of Defence, Victor Gaiciuc, head of Public Property Agency, Mihai Rusu, as well as head of Civil Aeronautical Authority, Eugen Costei, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

The chief of Executive was informed about the state of 02 objectives and what investments would be needed to make an operational international airport in the north of Moldova.

The director of the Marculesti International Airport, Nicolae Clichici, presented to PM the runway of 2,520 metres, airport equipment, warehouses, customs post, but also the endowed aircraft. In this context, he stated that the Airport is operational and can receive a wide range of ships at any time. The manager mentioned the investments necessary for construction of the passenger terminal and development of airport infrastructure.

PM Ion Chicu said that Moldova needs at least 01 airport. "At this point we are talking about the possibility of launching low – cost races from here. I think it is necessary an intense collaboration between the management of the Marculesti International Airport, Civil Aeronautical Authority and APP in order to carry out a feasibility study. The aim would be that, charter races to operate already commencing May 2020," said PM.

Ion Chicu also inspected the Balti Airport. The company activates and has 53 employees, owns aircraft, airport technology and a 2,240 metre runway with possibilities for its extension.

The director of Balti Airport, Viorel Catana, requested support in order to develop the Aviation School, as there have not been trained any specialists in the field in recent 20 years. The costs to train a pilot abroad amount up to €70,000.

PM Ion Chicu said that the responsible institutions would meet next week in Government to elaborate an action plan, meant to ensure the modernisation and certification of an International Airport, which would operate in the north of Moldova.
