Moldovan Prime Minister summoned responsible people to consider solid waste issue

Chisinau, 2 January /MOLDPRES/- Today Prime Minister Ion Chicu convened in a meeting the people responsible for examining the problem of solid waste. The premier described the situation on collection and processing of solid waste as a serious one and noted that the problem can no longer be ignored, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

The responsible institutions found that there are 1047 unauthorized solid landfills nationwide. Ways of applying the solutions recommended by the development partners of the Republic of Moldova and local specialists were discussed at the meeting.

He said “the goal is to identify the conditions in which the way of organization of collection and processing of solid waste will be a sustainable one ”.

The officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment informed the Prime Minister that Moldova is divided into 8 solid waste management regions. Feasibility studies have been carried out for 3 regions, which provide information on infrastructure and equipment needed for solid waste collection and processing.

At the end of the meeting, it was decided to pilot the project in one of the regions in order to accumulate the necessary experience and to improve the implementation plan, so that the pattern of the created structure is sustainable and the most suitable model for collecting payments for services is identified.

The prime minister ordered the creation of a national public institution responsible for the task of waste collection and processing and asked the MADRM management to communicate with the development partners in order to clarify the existing assistance opportunities.
