Moldovan agriculture ministry to back native producers of seeds

Chisinau, 10 January /MOLDPRES/ - The new legal provisions as to the import of agricultural plants, working out of requirements concerning the production, processing and placement on market of seeds were several aspects discussed at a 9 January meeting between Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Minister Ion Perju and representatives of scientific institutions from the vegetal sector.    

The participants in the meeting exchanged information and opinions on problems and challenges faced by researchers in the agriculture sector. “The sides considered options to settle them and discussed new strategies of research, innovation and development of the seeds’ production sector,” sources of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM) have said.

Ion Perju stressed that agriculture represented a priority for the government and that the competent ministry would support the research institutions in charge, as well as their initiatives, which yield results making the farming sector more competitive. “We back the initiatives which develop the agriculture from Moldova, make them more competitive, promote the native products and which can become an example for other research institutions of the country,” the minister noted.  

For their part, the representatives of the scientific institutions from the vegetal sector demanded support for strengthening the work of agricultural producers specialized in the production of seeds, improving the economic and financial activity of the branch institutions, boosting the work of the Association of Seeds Producers, as well as the creation of a mechanism of the due for varieties of protected plants.  

More enterprises and research institutions in the seeds sector work in Moldova, among which the Porumbeni Plant Growing Institute, Nistru-Olanesti from the south-eastern Stefan Voda district, AGROSELECT from northern Soroca district, TETRACOM from the northern Floresti district, etc. Starting from 2009, a laboratory accredited for testing seeds has been working in Moldova, in line with the requirements of the SM SREN ISO/CEI 17025:2006 Standard and the international accreditation – ISTA.
