Chisinau, 13 January /MOLDPRES/ - The old-style New Year will start with positive air temperatures during the day, frost at night, variable cloud, preponderantly sunny weather, without precipitation.
According to the State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS), air temperatures of up to +8 degrees are expected all over Moldova during the day on 14-15 January. At night, the air temperatures will drop to -5 degrees, with colder weather forecast to be traditionally in the northern region.
A tendency of cooling will be recorded in the country on the next days, so that, in the end of this week, negative air temperatures are expected during the day too.
On 14 January, the Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint Basil – one of the most important saints of the Orthodox Church. He was also one of the greatest Christian theologians, said to be protector from evil spirits. Under the tradition, if it is snowing on Saint Basil, the year will be rich and if it is sunny, people will be healthy and the year will be good.
The old-style New Year, which is marked unofficially, appeared with the change of the official calendar. The difference of 13 days between the Orthodox Christians’ official holidays appeared when some believers refused to adopt the Gregorian calendar and maintained the Julian one.
