Moldovan parliament speaker attends action on commemorating Holocaust's victims

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii, on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked all over the world today, has participated in a meeting-requiem held at the Memorial Venue of Fascism Victims on the Orhei highway from Chisinau, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.      

Attending the event were Deputy Parliament Speaker Monica Babuc, other MPs, government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Chisinau, of the Jewish Community from Moldova, association of former detainees of concentration camps and ghettos.     

In her speech, Zinaida Grecianii expressed solidarity with the Jews’ Community of Moldova, Romanies’ community, the Jews and Romanies from everywhere.  

”The International Holocaust Remembrance Day makes us think what we must undertake, in order not to allow the repeating of such a catastrophe. For this, we must preserve the memory of the then events and not forget the pain and shame for what happened, which we feel at present too. Our duty, of the authorities, of the civil society, of each citizen is to react against any forms of intolerance, discrimination, racism, anti-Semitism and xenophobia,” the parliament speaker said. 

The day of 27 January represents the day of liberation by the Soviet troops of the prisoners from the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp and marks the commemoration of the Holocaust’s victims internationally.

The monument to the Fascism victims from Chisinau was created by a team of sculptors led by Aurel David, the author of the famous painting Eminescu Tree, in 1980s. In 1990s, the monument was vandalized and abandoned. On 9 May 2015, the Memorial Venue of the Fascism Victims was inaugurated with the efforts of the Jewish Community.
