World Bank to support new activities for reforming education in Moldova in 2020

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Education Reform Project in Moldova (PRIM) will continue with new activities in 2020, the results of which, according to the authorities, will be felt by the pupils, teachers and parents. The programme is financially backed by the World Bank and is focused on the carrying out of reforms in the education sector, especially in gymnasiums and lyceums, in order to promote initiatives of improving the conditions for learning and strengthening the monitoring of the education systems.
The activities planned for this year provide for the training of psycho-teachers, endowment of 100 schools from Moldova with specialized equipment for children with disabilities, endowment of 160 schools with equipment for physics laboratories, continuing the process of renovating district schools, etc. According to the plan on PRIM’s implementation, in 2020, restoration works will be finished in eight district schools through the Social Investments Account (FISM). As many as 2,500 teachers will be trained and 700 managers of education institutions will be professionalized.
„The education reform is an imperative of the time. We manage to enforce this desideratum with the support of donors, international partners. This World-Bank-backed project is meant to support efforts by the Education, Culture and Research Ministry (MECC) to monitor the education process through the creation of conditions for education in Moldova’s schools, in line with the international standards, professionalizing teachers. Education is a sector worth to be invested in or a well-educated generation can provide a prosperous future to the country,” Education, Culture and Research Minister Corneliu Popovici said.
So far, ten district schools have been renovated within PRIM. Six of them were repaired or reconstructed by MECC, another four – through FISM. Also, 2,639 teachers were professionalized and 950 leadership staff was trained.
The Education Reform Project in Moldova, financed from a preferential loan provided by the World Bank, was launched in April 2013. Initially, the project’s duration was stipulated till August 2018; afterwards, however, it was extended till April 2022. The project’s overall budget is of about 50 million dollars.
