Moldovan parliament speaker says not to allow closing of schools for children with special needs

Chisinau, 4 February /MOLDPRES/ - The pupils of the special boarding school for hypoacusic children from the Harbovat village, central Calarasi district, today came on visit to the parliament speaker with an artistic programme and paintings made on glass. The meeting was emotional, including given that Zinaida Greceanii has known the children and teachers for more than 15 years, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
The children thanked the speaker for support and care, as well as for decision to take the institution under her patronage. Zinaida Greceanii expressed gratitude to the teachers from the special boarding school for their care and love for children and told the children that she admired their talent and perseverance.
The parliament speaker said that, in the last years, the school had gone through difficult periods, when decision-makers tried to close the institution. Nevertheless, the school resisted and Greceanii stressed that she would not allow the closing of the schools for children with special needs.
The special boarding school for hypoacusic children from the Harbovat village has been working since 1991, having a capacity of 198 places. The institution’s task is to create optimum conditions for a free and harmonious development of children with hearing deficiencies and their integration into the society.
Moldova’s parliament, by its own example, proves a responsible approaching of the problem of people with deficiencies and carries out diverse actions of enhancing the legislative body’s accessibility. The parliament edited booklets about its work in the Braille style (for people with sight deficiencies) and “easy to read,” as well as translated video-format informative materials into body language. The access ways and the internal structure of the parliament building are adjusted to the people with locomotor disabilities.
