Chisinau, 5 February /MOLDPRES/- Bender Fortress needs urgent intervention to preserve the building. These are findings of technical expertise, recently made by an Italian company, selected though international competition under the project – Confidence Building Measures, supported by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP Moldova).
According to experts, among the most serious problems of the fortress are the holes in the walls, left after decomposition of some wooden beams, the poor foundation of the bastion and the degraded state of one of the towers. Experts have used innovative technical methods to perform the technical expertise of Bender fortress. To confirm the findings, the specialists carried out excavations in several places, on the territory of the citadel.
The fortress preservation project will be conducted by the same company, but the works will be carried out by another company that will be selected by late 2020, under a competition.
The European Union announced in late 2019 that it would support the conservation of Bender and Circus in Chisinau, earmarking over 2 million euros for each. The projects are implemented through the Confidence Building Measures Program, meant to build confidence between the inhabitants of the two banks of the Dniester by involving them in joint development initiatives.
