Chisinau, 20 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Igor Dodon today participated in an international conference dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Constitutional Court’s (CCM) foundation. Attending the event were cabinet members, lawmakers, President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio, presidents and judges of other Constitutional Courts from 14 European Union and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries, representatives of the diplomatic corps, academic environment of Moldova and from abroad, representatives of the civil society, the presidential press service has reported.

In his speech, Igor Dodon said that, with the foundation of the Constitutional Court 25 years ago, the people of Moldova had laid the foundations of the rule of law state. On this occasion, the head of state conveyed congratulations and thanks to all actors involved in ensuring the constitutional order for the work carried out for the nation’s benefit.

At the same time, the Moldovan president stressed that the contemporary challenges imposed the leadership to once again focus on the process of ripening of the national democracy, on consolidation of the constitutional values, as well as on the propagation of a culture of constitutionalism, as in this way, we will be able to protect the state from pronounced intentions of discouraging the principles from the Constitution in the situation-related interest of political forces, which we saw some time ago, being witnesses of the so-called attempts of coup d’etat. In this respect, Igor Dodon highlighted the need to strengthen the stabilizing role of the Constitutional Court in the attempts of state power’s usurpation.

The head of state expressed confidence that the present composition of the Constitutional Court would perceive, at its true value, the institution’s role and would oppose attempts of the political environment to subjugate it. “Or, the Court’s tasks is to be a guide mark for the state’s institutions as regards the carrying out of the activity of ensuring a responsible governance, in which the citizens’ rights and freedoms are guaranteed,” the Moldovan president said.

Igor Dodon also gave assurances that, in his capacity of head of state – the guarantor of the sovereignty, he would continue to be a defender of the observance of the citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms, of the supreme values laid down in the Constitution.
