Chisinau, 21 February /MOLDPRES/- Plums rank second among the most exported fresh fruits from the Republic of Moldova and enjoy a high demand both on the East and West market. To guide the producers, the publication Production of plums was launched, published by the USAID High Value Agriculture Activity in Moldova Project.
According to official data, the global production of plums in 2019 was over 100 thousand tons. Of them, about 60 thousand tons of fresh plums were exported, including on the EU market - about 19 thousand tons. The results are due also to the assistance provided by USAID / APM for the modernization of the production technologies, the post-harvest infrastructure and the implementation of GLOBALG.A.P standards.
To facilitate the further expansion of exports to the EU market, Moldova has negotiated a 50 percent increase in the quota of 10 thousand tons for the import of Moldovan plums in the European Union without customs duties.
Currently, our country registers 30 varieties of plum, produced on an area of about 22.6 thousand hectares.
