Chisinau, 21 February /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu today summoned a meeting to consider the technical state of the irrigation infrastructure from the south-eastern Stefan Voda district. Attending the discussions were the leadership of the Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ministry (MADRM) and Public Property Agency (APP), Moldova’s Waters Agency, representatives of the leadership of the Stefan Voda district and farmers members of the associations of irrigation water users, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The issue of irrigation has been recently tackled at a visit by the PM to the Volintiri village, Stefan Voda district. “The Stefan Voda district has a big agricultural potential; yet, the bad irrigation infrastructure hinders its turning to account. We must see what we can re-establish, so that farmers can develop their businesses,” Ion Chicu said.
The district’s head informed the prime minister that the irrigation system from Stefan Voda covered an area of 23,000 hectares. The functionality of the obsolete infrastructure is compromised also by the fact that many components had been stolen, such as engines from collection stations, pumps, tubes.
The PM asked the APP leadership to report the thefts at inquiry authorities. Decision-makers from APP and Moldova’s Waters Agency were given the task to make an inventorying of the assets and evaluate the investments needed to ensure the functionality of the infrastructure.
