Chisinau, 22 February /MOLDPRES/ The Orthodox Christians today mark the All Souls’ Day. On this day, parishioners make offices for the dead. For the alms to be well-accepted, it is good for the Christians to observe the specific traditions of this day.
There are seven All Souls’ Days in the popular tradition. This cycle of seven Saturdays is opened by the Winter All Souls’ Day and ends with the Lazarus Saturday (before the Palm Sunday). The All Souls’ Day is the last Saturday before the Shrovetide. On all this period, believers make offices for the departed.
On All Souls’ Days, priests officiate the Holy Liturgy and the Service for the departed. Believers go to church with alms, wine, dishes cooked specially on this occasion, as well as fruits and sweets to be blessed by priests. Afterwards, these food products will be distributed along with a lighted candle for commemorating the dead.
