Moldovan head of state says government copes with situation concerning coronavirus

Chisinau, 25 February /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s authorities have undertaken all needed measures in the eventuality of the appearance of the new-type coronavirus (COVID-19) in Moldova. President Igor Dodon made statements to this effect after he had inspected the Chisinau International Airport and the Toma Ciorba hospital of infectious diseases today.
The head of state said that “the number of Moldovans returning home, including from Italy, in connection with the morbidity of coronavirus, is not increasing.” “We cannot ban people from returning home; yet, we should monitor the state of things and be prepared for any situation,” Igor Dodon said.
The president specified that people work in special regime at the Airport, with all necessary filters and instruments functional for preventing the passage of the infected persons. Also, places of hospitalization for eventually sick people are prepared at the Toma Ciorba hospital, as well as at other medical institutions from Moldova.
“The government copes with the situation, by taking all needed measures for the safety of the citizens, in the context of the spreading of coronavirus in the world. If necessary, I will summon the Supreme Security Council; yet, for the time being, the state’s institutions undertake all needed actions,” the head of state said.
For her part, Health, Labour and Social Protection Minister Viorica Dumbraveanu said that a string of tests for detecting the virus causing the new-type coronavirus had been brought from Germany to Chisinau. “Today, they were applied and proved their efficiency. The tests can identify and confirm the coronavirus, exactly and in several hours,” Dumbraveanu said.
The official informed that no case of falling sick with COVID-19 had been recorded in Moldova. The ministry created a focal point for monitoring the new-type coronavirus, which coordinates and exchanges information in this respect both nationally and internationally.
On 24 February, a Yellow Code was announced in Moldova nationally, in the context of the epidemiological situation through infection with COVID-19. According to the authorities, all public medical and sanitary institutions from Moldova have the needed stock of medicines and medical equipment and the Laboratory of the National Public Health Agency has received 480 tests for the detection of COVID-19 and 192 tests for specifying and confirming the result.
At present, cases of people ill of coronavirus were registered in more countries of Asia, Oceania, Africa, America and Europe. The situation recorded on 23 February shows that 78,833 cases of disease and 2,463 cases of death were reported globally.
