Government approves Moldova's accession to Convention concerning International Carriage by Rail

Chisinau, 27 February /MOLDPRES/ - The government, at a meeting on 26 February, ruled Moldova’s accession to the Convention concerning the International Carriage by Rail (COTIF), signed in Bern on 9 May 1980, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The Convention will open a string of opportunities, among which there are: possibility of transit on the East-West direction, through two border crossing points (Ungheni-Iasi and Giurgiulesti-Galati); increase in the volume of transport of goods in transit on the East-West direction to both sides; enhancing the capacities of competition on the transit routes of the Railway of Moldova (CFM); increase in the revenues from the tariff of transited goods, etc.
The joining of COTIF will enhance the opportunities of carrying goods in transit through the border crossing points Ungheni (CFM) – Cristesti Jijia (CFR – Romanian Railways); Giurgiulesti (CFM) – Galati Larga (CFR).
The main goal of the Convention is to provide an integrated development of the international railway transport. Presently, 50 states from Europe are COTIF members.
