Moldovan PM meets Belarusian counterpart in Minsk

Chisinau, 17 July /MOLDPRES/ - On visit to Minsk on the occasion of participation in a meeting of the Intergovernmental Council of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), Prime Minister Ion Chicu has met his Belarusian counterpart Roman Golovchenko, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
PM Chicu congratulated the prime minister of Belarus on his recent swearing in office. The Moldovan prime minister wished him a successful mandate and voiced confidence that the Moldovan-Belarusian relations would continue flourishing in the same friendly and constructive way.
The officials discussed opportunities of developing cooperation in key sectors of common interest. The sides stressed the need to boost efforts, in order to strengthen and develop the commercial and economic relations. Ion Chicu expressed the government’s interest in increasing the exports of Moldovan goods to the Belarusian market and jointly identify cooperation projects, turning to good account the present potential.
In the context of combating the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the sides committed to join efforts and appreciated the cooperation in the repatriation of both states’ citizens.
The two PMs discussed joint projects on the development of infrastructure in Moldova. ‘’We welcome and encourage the active participation of Belarusian companies in tenders launched for roads’ construction. We are interested in the experience of Belarus and we want to continue the cooperation as to the assembling of buses and trolley buses, eventually the fabrication of new models of electric buses,’’ Ion Chicu said.
The officials showed interest in the implementation of investment projects in the wine, agro-industrial, animal husbandry and pharmaceutical sectors. Moldova is willing to take over the Belarusian experience in the development of the animal-breeding complexes, as well as of the seed sector.
For his part, Prime Minister Golovchenko gave assurances that his government was willing to foster the work of the Moldovan-Belarusian inter-governmental commission for commercial and economic cooperation. The Minsk government expressed interest in the Moldovan government’s initiative on the development of those 16 industrial platforms, which will open new opportunities for the Moldovan-Belarusian bilateral cooperation.
On the period January-May 2020, the trade exchanges between Moldova and Belarus amounted to 65.5 million dollars. Thus, Belarus ranks 11th among Moldova’s foreign commercial partners, with exports worth 28.1 million dollars.
