Moldova's foreign debt represents 68 percent of GDP

Chisinau, 6 July /MOLDPRES/- During the first quarter of this year, the external debt of the Republic of Moldova decreased by 1.2 percent.
The National Bank of Moldova announced that according to preliminary data, the gross foreign debt of our country decreased in the first quarter by 1.2 percent and amounted to 8 billion 253.89 million dollars on 31.03.2021, which is 68.0 percent on GDP.
The information presented by the National Bank mentions that the public and publicly guaranteed external debt represented 28.6 percent of the total external debt, amounting to 2 billion 360.49 million USD. The structure of public external debt by creditors, according to the situation as of March 31, shows that the main creditor of the state remained the World Bank Group, with a share of 33.2 percent of the total. It is followed by the FMI with 27.3% and the EIB with 17.9%. Unsecured private external debt amounted to 5 billion 893.40 million dollars, down by 0.6 percent against 31 December last year.
The largest share of the gross external debt balance is long-term debt (71.2 percent), which amounted to 5 billion 874.98 million dollars on 31 March 2021, down by 1.6 percent from the beginning of the year . Short-term external debt decreased by 0.3 percent during the first quarter of this year and amounted to USD 2 billion 378.91 million as of 31 March this year.
