Chisinau, 30 September /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet today approved a note to the draft law for the amendment of the code of commercial sea navigation of Moldova. It refers to the classification and supervision of the technical state of the ships by the classification societies enjoying the recognition by the European Commission, regulated by the EU Directive 2016/1629, laying down technical requirements for inland waterway vessels, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
At present, in the amended code, the government is the one which recognizes the classification societies, which does not meet the European Union’s legislation.
Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu says that, through delegating the duties of classification and inspection of Moldovan ships to the societies enjoying EU’s recognition, Moldova, as pavilion state, will make sure that the ships will be inspected and exploited according to the European rigours.
The European Commission, through the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), assesses each of the recognized organizations once in two years. The evaluation process is carried out, in order to verify the performance of the organizations which have recognition.
There are over 50 classification societies in the world, of which 11 are presently recognized by the European Union.
