Moldovan foreign affairs minister, NATO deputy secretary general discuss by phone

Chisinau, 10 January /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has had a phone conversation with Deputy Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mircea Geoana. The subject of the discussion was focused on the security situation in the context of the latest regional developments.

The Moldovan diplomacy head stressed that we needed a stable region; therefore, Moldova backs the necessity of the dialogue on the European security and speaks out for its holding in an as peaceful and constructive atmosphere as possible, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.   

In the NATO's dialogue with Russia, which must be transparent, Minister Nicu Popescu declared for comprehensive and inclusive discussions on the strengthening of the European security, taking into account the observance of the interests and concerns of the states concerned, including Moldova.  

„Moldova’s dialogue with the NATO is carried out in a framework set on the constitutional principle of neutrality, an aspect which does not mean isolation and does not hinder to develop the cooperation in the sectors which meet our national interests. Only the people can decide which are the most fit ways of ensuring the security and only we, inside the country, can choose the solutions necessary, in accordance with the people’s will,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu stressed. 

Also, during the conversation with the high-ranking NATO official, Deputy PM Nicu Popescu reiterated that Moldova’s neutrality must be and can be observed through the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the country’s territory.   

„We appreciated the consultation of our country’s position as regards the regional situation and reconfirmation of the Alliance’s commitment for the partnership with Moldova, as well as the organization’s support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,’’ Nicu Popescu added.
