Moldovan president says policies of Memory are necessary, in which assuming of past should be courage act

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today participated in a meeting on commemoration of the Holocaust victims, the presidential press service has reported.   

„This is a tragedy, which is not only part of the history of the Jewish nation. It is also a part of our history, which we cannot deny or hide. It is part of a past during which the people of this land were both witnesses and even unhappy protagonists. This is the history of ordinary, real people, who were rooted out of their peaceful lives and subjected to inhuman ordeal,’’ the head of state said in her speech.   

According to President Maia Sandu, the history of the Holocaust teaches us that the greatest Evil does not begin from bullet or fist. The greatest Evil starts from the word which gives birth to and allows the starting of hatred and the hatred makes possible the pulling of the trigger. The head of state says that this is much more important now, in the age of the hybrid wars, of the avalanche of misinformation, fake news and lies, that we detect and trenchantly condemn any discourse of hatred, violence, and blackmail against people, no matter the ethnicity, origin, religion or political visions.   

„For this black page of the history to never be repeated, we must not only preserve the memory, but also act, resolutely and without fear, facing extremist manifestations. And we also need the articulation of policies of the Memory, in which the assuming of the past, with all its misfortunes, should be an act of courage, meant to transform us into a more mature and more empathic society. We cannot change the past, but we can make sure that the next generations will not face such plagues too,’’ President Maia Sandu stressed. He urged to edify relations of friendship, tolerance and inter-ethnic acceptance, relations based on trust and mutual respect.
