Moldovan academician passes away

Chisinau, 29 January /MOLDPRES/- Academician Sveatoslav Moscalenco, university professor, PhD in physical and mathematical sciences, laureate of the State Prize, holder of the Order of the Republic today died at the age of 93 years. The president of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (ASM), Ion Tighineanu, has made statements to this effect.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, ASM president, academician Ion Tighineanu said that Sveatoslav Moscalenco had been a personality with world fame, who, just as his twin brother, academician Vsevolod Moscalenco, had dedicated his entire life to the science. ‘’Academician Sveatoslav Moscalenco distinguished himself through significant theoretical elaborations in the field of condensed matter physics, non-linear optics and quantum optics. Six decades ago, he predicted and elucidated a phenomenon which stayed at the basis of the elaboration of a new type of laser – polariton laser, with unique performances for use in medicine. Academician Sveatoslav Moscalenco brought Moldova’s fame in the world, being the only laureate of the State Prize in the former USSR in the field of science and technology in our country,’’ the ASM president stressed.
Academician Sveatoslav Moscalenco was born in the Bravicea village, Orhei county, on 26 September 1928. He studied at the B.P. Hasdeu Lyceum and the A. Russo Lyceum, one year (1944-45), Moscalenco studied at the national college from Craiova, Romania. In 1946, he finished the Moldovan school No 2 from the Orhei town. In the same year, along with his twin brother Vsevolod Moscalenco, he was admitted to the State University of Moldova, the Physics and Mathematics Faculty, which he graduated in 1951.
Sveatoslav Moscalenco made his doctor’s studies at the Kiev-based Physics Institute in 1956-1960). He was junior and senior scientific employee at the Physics and Mathematics Institute of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences (till 1963); as of 1964, Moscalenco was head of section at the Applied Physics Institute. For more years, he led the section of theory of semi-conductors and quantum electronics. The scientist was awarded the Order of the Republic, honorific title Merited Man, the State Prize in the science and technology sector, the ASM medal Dimitrie Cantemir, the ASM medals Scientific Merit of the first and second degrees.
Academician Sveatoslav Moscalenco will be buried at the Central Cemetery from the Armeneasca Street of Chisinau on 31 January. A mourning meeting will be held there at 12:30.
