Chisinau, 29 October /MOLDPRES/ -The national Holocaust victims remembrance day will be marked in Moldova on 27 January each year. The government approved a decision to this effect on 28 October.

According to a communiqué by the Labour, Social Protection and Family Ministry, the commemorative day was established, “taking into account the European states’ practices, history and model of peaceful coexistence of national minorities in Moldova”, as well as to prevent “the tragic phenomena of the past."

The Holocaust is a term used to describe the murder of about six million Jews of all ages, mostly from Europe, during the World War II. The Holocaust was part of “the final solution of the Jewish problem”, - programme to exterminate the Jews, planned and carried out by Adolf Hitler's regime.

According to data by the Inter-ethnic Relations Bureau, representatives of more ethnic groups, including Poles, Belarusians, Russians, Ukrainians, Jews, Romany people, Gagauz, Bulgarians, etc., are currently residing in Moldova.
