Chisinau, 6 November /MOLDPRES/- More than 60 women from all over Moldova assembled in Chisinau today to discuss the model provided by the Compact Programme to ensure the participation of women in the enforcement of projects on reforms and investments in infrastructure, as well as to tackle the role of women in the successful implementation of such projects.
The Millennium Challenge Corporation’s Compact Programme (USA) helped Moldova restore the Sarateni-Soroca road segment, transit to modern agriculture and rebuild ten irrigation systems. The programme also encouraged Moldovan women to become entrepreneurs and develop agricultural businesses.
Executive Director of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova Valentina Badrajan said that "in the last five years, the programme succeeded to prove Moldova is able to implement successful projects. This large-scale programme improved living standards of people from the countryside and offered women new opportunities to manage successful and sustainable agricultural businesses."
Attending the event was also US Deputy Ambassador to Moldova Julie Stuftt. The American official noted that “the Compact Programme is one of the best cooperation programmes between Moldova and the USA, aimed to destroy social barriers, bring active women to the negotiating table and help them defend their position in the society."
For her part, Moldovan Deputy Labour, Social Protection and Family Minister Nighina Azizov thanked the American people for investing in Moldova, adding that “it is really hard for a woman to assert herself in the society in transition; however, this project has proved it is possible. We must enhance the potential of rural women, therefore, I urge you to create and develop new businesses. We will take efforts to promote projects meant to support you."
Compact is an assistance programme the U.S. Government has been implementing in Moldova through the Millennium Challenge Corporation during 2010-2015. The programme had a 262-million-dollar budget, with the money offered as grant.
