Chisinau, 12 November /MOLDPRES/-The Slovakian Embassy to Moldova today donated 15 hearing aids for hearing-impaired people and 42 blood pressure measuring devices (tonometers).

The head of the Homecare civil association, said the devices had been donated to old people with small incomes. However, some of them are bedridden, and therefore, could not attend the donation ceremony.

Deputy Health Minister Gheorghe Turcanu said beneficiaries would now be able to have a better communication with the people around them. Also, tonometers will help patients prevent further complications caused by high blood pressure. “Stroke is the worst complication, which disables patients. Approximately 30 per cent of the total amount of people hit by a stroke had died,” Turcanu said.

The official added that a National Programme on Cardiovascular Diseases Control was being implemented in Moldova during 2014-2018. The programme sees that family physicians must check the blood pressure of all their patients above 18.

Slovakian Ambassador Robert Kirnag said all the devices were new, adding that hearing aids were American, and tonometers were Swiss. The financial value of the project stands at approximately five thousand euros.

In Moldova, a hearing aid costs from three to 30 thousand lei (150-1500 euros), while the price of a blood pressure measuring device might vary from 400 to 1500 lei.
