Diabetes awareness-raising campaign to be held in Moldova

Chisinau, 12 November /MOLDPRES/-An awareness-raising campaign on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day will be carried out by the Health Ministry in Moldova during 12-18 November.
The ministry will organise a string of actions to inform people of diabetes prophylaxis and treatment and offer them the opportunity to participate in medical conferences, workshops, public and individual informative sessions, as well as to get free-of-charge checks of their glycemic level.
“More and more people get diabetes. It is one of the sixth diseases causing a high level of mortality around the globe. The highest death rate is registered among working people,” Deputy Health Minister Aliona Serbulenco said.
As for Moldova, diabetes accounts for about 48 per cent of the total amount of endocrine nutritional and metabolism diseases. While about 84 thousand Moldovan citizens are already suffering from this disease, doctors register 9,000 new diabetes cases every year.
According to Serbulenco, Moldova has almost 80 endocrinologists who monitor, detect and prescribe medication to people with diabetes.
As far as 366 million people all over the world suffer from diabetes, and almost five million people die annually because of it.
The World Diabetes Day is being held annually on 14 November, at the initiative of the International Diabetes Federation, with the support of the World Health Organisation.
