Moldovan government to approve new national diabetes prophylaxis programme

Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/-Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega today attended an event held within the awareness raising week on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.

Brega said such events were very important to raise people's awareness and inform them of methods to promote a healthy lifestyle essential for the diabetes prophylaxis. “Diabetes is a real challenge for the Moldovan health sector; we must take joint efforts to keep our children healthy and raise a healthy generation,” Brega said.

The acting prime ministers believes it is essential to earmark funds to enforce diabetes prophylaxis and combating measures, in order to achieve early detection of the disease and reduce mortality, especially among individuals with risk factors.  

Brega noted that the Moldovan government would approve a new policy document in this sense, after it finishes the assessment of the enforcement of the National Diabetes Prophylaxis and Combating Programme for 2011-2015.  

During the event, the acting prime minister awarded a first degree government diploma to the head of the PRIOBID Association of Moldovan Diabetes Patients, Boris Golovin, for his contribution to the development of diabetes prophylaxis and treatment standards in Moldova.

The World Diabetes Day is being annually held on 14 November, at the initiative of the International Diabetes Federation with the support of the World Health Organisation (WHO). At present, Moldova has almost 84 thousand diabetes patients. Diabetes death rate increased 1,5 fold in Moldova over the last ten years.
