Chisinau, 9 December /MOLDPRES/- Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega during the cabinet meeting today said the dam of the reservoir Ghidighici might be guarded by soldiers of the National Army. He added that “the situation is not good, but still not that severe” as some mass media sources had described it.
“Though the dam is not a hazard for our safety so far, it still has some problems. It must be repaired and fortified. Besides, its guards need to be strengthened,” the prime minister said, during his fact-collecting visit this morning. He added that “the guards of the dam must be enhanced. Though the Ghidighici Lake is a strategic object, its guards are not endowed with the necessary equipment and it lacks lighting. I demanded that the Supreme Security Council put the National Army in charge of guarding the lake”.
The prime minister added that the General Prosecution should take notice and investigate the lawfulness of the decision to build houses and holiday resorts in the perimeter of the lake.
The Ghidighici Lake was poorly managed by the Society of Hunters and Fishers until 2014, due to which “the situation of the dam is so bad nowadays”. In 2014, the Apele Moldovei Agency was put in charge of the lake. The Environment Ministry allotted 2.6 million lei to repair the dam. Restoration works will start on 10 December.
The Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) sent President Nicolae Timofti and acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega a warning note on the dam’s non-compliance with the minimum security measures. “The water level adjusting mechanism is partially functioning, so that the drainage process risks overflowing spontaneously and flooding large adjacent areas, including a part of Chisinau municipality,” the SIS’ note reads.
